Resentment
It’s personally and generally destructive.
There is a cadre of people who love to hate the new money rich.
They’re fine with the old money rich, who donate to the right causes and don’t rock the boat. They don’t actually like the Bush family, or the Romneys, or the Cheneys, but they don’t hate them. Inherited wealth is no reflection on them.
They don’t hate the actors and actresses and pro athletes. Those people also inherited their gifts, which brought them such rewards.
They hate the people, mostly men, who built fortunes within their own lifetimes. They don’t want to think they frittered away their own opportunities and their own lives. Those new rich must have cheated, somehow.
We can’t let such peoples’ attitudes prevail, any more than we let the super wealthy hire goons. These are the people who key strangers’ cars. These are the people who kill the goose that lays the golden eggs, out of spite.
